Cage Materials

Hello,

I keep reading that cages should be made of all stainless steel with no plastic, yet I never find anything like this. All of the cages for sale everywhere seem to be advertised as having powder coating. Even though the claim is that it's non-toxic, I've been told on bird forums not to put a bird into one of these. I'm very confused, and shopping for a cage has become very complicated, and is holding up the process of my getting the birds I would like to have.

Forum: Bird

Large cage for small birds

Hello, I am looking for a nice large cage for a small bird, but most seem to have a pitched roof. This makes hanging toys and other aspects difficult. Have you ever seen a cage like this in the US? http://forums.avianavenue.com/feathered-photos-fairway/12647-getting-groovy.html

Forum: Bird

Water Bottle

In my humble opinion, the best thing you can do for you and your bird is to install a water bottle in the cage. As we all know, water in dishes are constantly getting contaminated with droppings, dander and food, and you have to change it 2 or 3 times a day just to try and keep it clean. Get a water bottle and you only have to refill it once or twice a week depending on the bird and more importantly, your bird(s) will always have clean water to drink! I use Lixit (PA2500) for both my birds - the 32 oz 5/8 Tuff Tip for my blue and gold and the 16 oz 7/16 tip for my grey.

Here are my suggestions on how to introduce a water bottle to your bird -
1 - Install bottle and with your bird in the cage show your bird the tip and where the water comes out - touch it so they know it is safe (there is a stainless steel ball the birds pushes up with its tongue to get the water).
2 - Mark the bottle level. If you see your bird drinking from the bottle, the remove the water from the bowl. If you do not see your bird drinking from the bottle, then check your mark on the level - once this is going down, remove the water form the bowl.
3 - In rare cases, you will need to remove the water from the bowl and only put in a couple of times a day (just to make sure your bird is getting water in the event the bird will not use the water bottle - in 8 years I have never heard of a bird refusing to drink from a bottle.

Forum: Bird
